Q: I have a zone offense question. When attacking a 2-3 zone, if the point drives the gap right up the gut, splitting the defenders, it’s hard to initiate circle movement because they’re neither going right nor left around a defender. When this happens, it seems like my kids’ offense breaks down. How do you suggest addressing this? PS, this is the best offensive scheme I’ve ever seen. Congratulations and thank you for your innovation.
A: Thanks for getting the offense. I hope the R&R will help you become a more effective coach and if it does, that’s a great reward for me!
In the situation you described, Circle Movement should be determined by whichever hand the penetrator is dribbling with. If she splits the defenders with a right hand dribble, then everyone should circle right. (Of course, Post Players will first drop to the short corner [Layer 4] and then continue in a Circle Move to the right [Layer 10]. If the penetrator dribbles with the left hand, then the Circle turns left.
