Q: I am trying to implement the system with my 7th grade team. Since the range of experience varies from 0 to 4 years of AAU basketball, many of my kids panic when they get the ball with a live defender on them. I want to simplify this for them at the beginning in order to get the offense started. The only thing I can think of is: “When you get the ball and your DEFENDER is over the 19 foot line - drive. If he is behind the 19 ft. line - look to pass.” At least this will get the kids used to driving when defended and get everyone moving. Do you see any drawbacks in this approach, at least at the beginning with inexperienced players?
A: I think that this is a great “read” for young players. I don’t see any problem with it at all.
