Q: I have a question about the 5 OUT system and Layer 3 Pass and Cut. If the player in the corner has the ball and passes from the corner to the wing, then cuts to the basket, where does she go after that?
A: When you first begin to teach Layer 3, the only place for the corner to fill out is the spot from which she left - she has to replace herself.
Solution #1: However, this is only true if you’re using a 5 OUT formation. 4 OUT or 3 OUT will have open spots on the perimeter for the corner to fill.
Solution #2: When you allow back screens, the corner can fill out to any spot on the perimeter by simply setting a backscreen for any teammate.
Solution #3: If you allow your players to play in the post, the corner can remain in the post on the ballside or the weakside after her basket cut. Ballside post is obvious, but why stop on the weakside post? To set a Pin Screen on a helping defender. But this means you would have had to implemented Layer 14 Pin & Skip. Remember that Layer 14 can be taught at anytime - even the first day of practice. It doesn’t depend on previous layers in order to be used or understood.
Hope this helps.
