Here is another drill idea I came up with. I noticed watching game tape that my players did not shot fake or pass fake enough (collegiate players do it almost every time they touch the ball) so I invented this drill to practice the pass & cut layer as well as shot & pass fakes. This drill is good in practice and also works well as a pregame warm up drill.
At least 7 players are required (5 in the 5 OUT spots, one out of bounds near the right corner, and one out of bounds near the left corner). Start with the ball at the point. He must shot fake, pass, and cut. The baseline cutter goes to the opposite corner, but rather than filling the opposite corner spot, the player out of bounds steps in and the cutter goes to the line out of bounds in the corner. The players continue catching, faking, passing & cutting in such a manner. If you want to make it more defined you could go 90 sec. shot fake, 90 sec. pass fake, 90 sec. player’s choice.
This drill can be used to emphasize the following habits: jump into the catch, face up triple threat, shot and pass faking, cutting skills, and the pass & cut habit. We also do this in practice with a heavy ball and emphasize crisp passing to the outside shoulder.
