Q: I recently attended the USA Coaches Clinic in St. Louis where you showed the R&R and I have both sets of DVDs. I only got through layer 8 last season, but my girls and I love this offense!
I have five incoming Freshmen this season and want to get a jump-start on the season so I am having a camp in a few weeks. I want to follow your clinic idea to get the basic habits of the system implemented so we can hit the ground running when our season starts.
My question is regarding teaching at this camp. On your clinic DVD set it starts off with you running the cone game with five players, cones, and tennis balls. How much did you teach before you got to that point or did you just start with that? I realize once I start doing the 15 fundamentals I’ll divide the team into stations throughout the court with helpers or an assistant coach at each station. But is there a “preferred” way/methodology to incorporating the habits before the season begins?
Thanks for your help, keep up the great work. You have done an excellent job with this!!
A: Thanks for the kind words. It’s coaches like yourself that will change the way basketball is taught and played. My hat’s off to you!
I didn’t teach anything about the Read & React before the Cone Games. I used these games to introduce the movements and spacing without the players knowing that I was actually teaching them the R&R Offense. Sometimes, young players are resistant to learning when the setting is “drilling and teaching” by the coach. I simply wanted to tap into their desire to compete and have fun. With these kinds of Cone Games, I was hoping to “change channels” in the young players’ minds, i.e., teach them without them knowing that I’m teaching them.
By the way, I’m sure there are ways to make the 15 Fundamental Drills into something competitive and fun. I haven’t had the time to be creative enough to come up with them. Maybe you can do it (or someone else in the R&R Tribe), we’ll film it, and I’ll cut an extra DVD for the Read & React community! What do you think?
Making a 15 fundamental drills into something competitive and fun DVD would be FANTASTIC
Hi Coach Torbett,
I love the R&R. I am curious as to what the CONE GAMES are. Could you give me a detailed description of the games?
Thank you in advance,

Hey Coralie,
I’ve elaborated on the Cone Games in a recent blog post appropriately titled, “Cone Games: Elaborated” in the “Practice Ideas & Aides” as well as “Youth Coaching” categories.
Here’s the link, http://www.betterbasketball.com/read-and-react-offense/practice-ideas-and-aides/cone-games-2/.
I hope they are useful.
