Q: Consider a 4 OUT set with the top four spots filled: two guard spots, two wing spots, corners empty. The post is on the left side of the lane. When the right wing drives left toward the center of the lane, the left wing slides to the corner, the left guard slides to the left wing, and the right guard slides to the left guard spot. This leaves the penetrator without a safety valve. Is this a situation that we have to just “live” with or does the right guard adjust his slide slightly and serve both the 90 degree and safety valve role?
A: If you have not put in Advanced Post Slides, then this is a situation that you have to “live with”. But, with Advanced Post Slides, the post takes one step toward the short corner and then circles under the basket (the same direction of Circle Movement that the Perimeter Players are moving). If the post does not receive a pass while cutting under the basket, she is to continue circling until she winds up in the Safety Valve position behind the penetrator.
