In August, just before we were ready to kick off the season, I had a game plan set. From point A to Z we had every step of the way covered…from offense to defense…from weights to the classroom….we left no stone unturned. Then, I got a phone call from a High School Coach and a dear friend Milt Travis (Buford High School). The conversation started with small talk and ended in an hour of Read and React information – it turns out that Rick was looking for a team to demonstrate at his clinic.
I was overly skeptical because of the timing: I didn’t want my guys learning something that wasn’t part of our plan. Simply out of curiosity, I asked Rick to come up and share with me what he had in the Read and React – at the very least I was excited to grow and expand my basketball knowledge, but I was still not convinced we should do the clinic. As we began to talk, I realized I was speaking with someone who was:
-passionate about the game
-had done his homework
-had a plan and a vision
But I wanted to find a reason not to like it: my plan was set and I didn’t need a new one…
After we talked I took the DVDs home, watched them, and realized that everything about the system was just such good basketball… great spacing, great player movement, and great ball movement. All the things I liked to incorporate into my offense were included. Not only did it have all of that it had more… it was organized… and suddenly there was no doubt in my mind my players could learn it with ease.
We were about 1 week from practice and I couldn’t believe that I was thinking about changing everything on the offensive end. No matter how hard I tried to get away from it, I couldn’t. I believed in it too much.
Long story short we began to implement the READ & REACT… and I am sold for life.
This program helped me and my team accomplish things never before done in school history!!!!
The even better news is we have just scratched the surface. I cannot wait to spend my summer improving my team and moving forward in the Read and React.
