Subscriber Question from Adam in Jericho, NY
When a defender plays me tightly my first thought is to drive. When a defender plays me loosely I shoot, but what confuses me is when the defender is in that middle area where he can challenge my shot (because of superior athleticism or size since I lack size), and also play the drive as a result of being a safe distance from me. Being a great scorer yourself what was your read when the defender played you in that middle area where he can challenge both the shot and the drive and what can someone who lacks size do to get their shot off when the defender is in that area? Thanks for your help.
Barry's Response
Adam,
It's quite simple. Assuming you are a right-handed player, from the triple-threat position, you make a deliberate step with your right leg at the defender, just toward the outside of his left foot. As you do this, he will usually begin to react by moving in some manner. Then you must be prepared to actually step directly into your shot just as he makes the first movement of his body in reaction to your step. It will be impossible for him to stop his initial movement in time to get to your shot. If he doesn't react at all to your jab, then just go around him.
Good luck and HAPPY HOOPING!
