So You Made the Team, Now What?
2/4/2007
By Bill Fleming
General Manager of the USBL's Scranton Breakers

Bill Fleming, the President and GM of a minor league team, cuts dozens of pro players every year. Fleming follows up his previous article on how to get through Veteran's Camp with this article describing the etiquette required for success once a player has made a minor league team.  With the next step being the NBA, every move made is an important one - Fleming details the dos and don'ts.

You can’t stop the feeling of euphoria.  You have made the team.  Every one from rookies to veterans feels the release of pressure and joy overcomes all.  It’s the best times for a GM when we can say those magic words.  Then as soon as you say them fear strikes and you think, did I make the right move with this guy?

Looking back after two years I have made some good, some so, so and some horrible moves.  Some were just wrong players for the chemistry of the team and others were just not good enough against the league’s other players.  Here are some of my own Monday morning quarterbacking suggestions for League players.  Again,

Do’s and Don’ts.

Don’t

· Think just because you made the team today you can not stop playing your hardest in practice.  The old adage still applies “practice makes perfect.”

· Don’t be insulted or mad or sulk if you do not start or play much, your turn will come.

· Don’t question the coach or try to second-guess them, “remember the coaches in the minor leagues have for the most part, more job security than you”!  You can be replaced faster then they can.  Especially first year players.  I had to fire 3 players for openly questioning the coaches’ ability or player rotation.  One player was fired on the spot for arguing on the court in the middle of the game.

· Don’t leave the court after the game before either all the fans have left or they are not around seeking autographs.

· Never be LATE for anything!!

Do

· Be early for practice and game day.

· You’re not in the NBA so greet the fans and SHAKE HANDS.

· Create your own fan club by being nice and up front and personal.  The GM and owner will thank you and if it comes time to release you or another and abilities are close, they will pick the player that is a fan favorite to stay.

· Watch your opponent while you are on the bench, expose their weaknesses so when it’s your turn to play you already know how to defend them or get around them.  This seems to be a lost art.  Some players could not tell me if an opposing player is left or right handed.

· When out and about in public promote the club.  If you talk to an owner of a business and he seems excited about the team or players, tell the coach or GM ASAP, they could be new sponsor and you may receive a little bonus in your check.

Lastly, you are building a resume for the next year and hopefully the next step to the League so do your best to keep your nose clean and get the job done!!  You will move up if you work at it.

Good Luck
